Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum–Doors are Open!
A note from the director:
The museum re-opened slowly but surely along with the unfolding of spring. A cautious and successful trial run of one day a week to welcome back visitors was shortly followed by the addition of Friday and Saturday hours. Now the doors are fully open, with the museum back to “regular” operating levels. It’s gratifying to see the parking lot busy again after what felt like endless months.
Volunteers are back, making themselves busy enriching the museum: cleaning wood type, beautifying the building, cataloging, printing, and photographing the collections. Visitors again traverse the galleries browsing the wood-type specimens, antique printing presses, and letterpress works of art. Curiosity is sparked, and visitors ask questions that cause staff and volunteers to look afresh.
The first large gathering took place in May. We hosted the Two Rivers Business Association Member meeting with safety measures in place. It was gratifying to be part of people’s joy to once again socialize face to face.
In-person programs begin Saturday, July 10 with the Globe Spectacular Letterpress Workshop. Attendees will print with unique pieces of history at the Museum in this on-site, one-day workshop. With more on-site programming, we will welcome attendees to try their hand at letterpress printing, bookmaking and enjoy hands-on experiences with many other crafts of the graphic arts. The museum event calendar has several great opportunities scheduled through September.
My hope is that COVID will recede into memory, clearing the way for Hamilton to continue to grow and improve. We are inspired to bring exciting new exhibits, programs, and events to our local and international communities.
