Door to Door Solicitation
BE WARY OF WHO IS KNOCKING AT YOUR DOOR!
As the weather warms up in Manitowoc County, people from different organizations will again be going door to door. These people may be canvassing your political or religious beliefs. They may be asking for donations. Some may be selling products and others may be offering to do contract work for you.
Please be wary of these strangers who are knocking at your door! They may have the proper permits and be there for legitimate reasons, but they may also be there to take advantage of you. Every year, Wisconsin residents fall victim to illegal fundraisers and illegitimate contractors or sales representatives. Do not invite these people into your home. They may be there to steal things or to determine what valuables that you have.
If people come to your door asking for your money, make sure that you ask them a lot of questions. You should be asking if they have the proper permits and licenses. Ask them what percent of your donation would go to the intended organization. Ask what percent is spent on administration and other fundraisers. Ask them for references. Know who you are dealing with. Ask for their company’s background information. Then do research on that company prior to giving them money or signing a contract. Use the Internet as tool for your research.
If you feel that these visitors are not legitimate call your local law enforcement agency. Another option is to contact the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection at 1-800-422-7128.
